Jesus Christ gave a powerful, named endorsement to only one Old Testament prophet when outlining the final events of human history. Welcome back to our small group study! John Barnett here. I want you to imagine we are sitting right across the table from each other, maybe at Panera, Starbucks, or Chipotle, with our Bibles open, our journals ready, and a fresh cup of coffee.
Today, I am incredibly excited to introduce a class that takes us straight into the most attacked book of the entire Bible to prove why we can have absolute confidence in God’s prophetic word. Drawn directly from our study session, let me walk you through three memorable, life-changing truths we will unpack together:
1. The Divine Endorsement and the Buried Empire
Scripture References: Matthew 24:15, 25; Mark 13; Luke 21.
Summary of What’s Covered: We kick off the class by looking at why we can trust every single word of Scripture. The number one reason I believe the Bible is true is incredibly simple: Jesus believed it was true! We will explore how Jesus personally authenticates the prophet Daniel, calling him by name in His longest sermon on the future. To illustrate how archaeological discoveries continually prove skeptics wrong, I will share the amazing story of a World War I German industrialist who overheard Turks in a bar talking about giant stone figures, went digging in the Turkish desert, and uncovered the massive, forgotten Hittite Empire—which encyclopedias and skeptics claimed only existed in the pages of the Bible.
2. Metal Statues and Rapacious Beasts
Scripture References: Daniel 2; Daniel 7.
Summary of What’s Covered: Next, we will compare how humanity views history versus how Almighty God views it. In Daniel 2, we see human history from man’s perspective as a glorious, glitzy statue of gold, silver, bronze, and iron. But in Daniel 7, we see that same timeline from God’s perspective: a series of rapacious, violent, and murderous beasts. We will explore these four great world empires—Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome—and discuss how the geographic boundaries of the ancient Roman Empire, which today are two-thirds Islamic, perfectly set the stage for the revived Roman Empire of the last days.
3. The Prince of Deception and the Tribulation Temple
Scripture References: Daniel 9:24-27; Matthew 24; Revelation 11.
Summary of What’s Covered: Finally, we look at the sobering culmination of human history. We will trace the 69-week prophetic timeline that led to Christ’s crucifixion, the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70, and the future rise of the Antichrist—the man of sin and son of perdition. We will see how this ultimate deceiver brokers a seven-year covenant that allows the Jewish people to rebuild their temple and resume sacrifices in Jerusalem, only for him to desecrate it halfway through. This triggers the Great Tribulation, culminating in the battle of Armageddon where Jesus physically returns to rescue His chosen people and launch His glorious kingdom.
